Martha Quinn Too!

Posted on Jan 10th, 2007 by Annisa : unbounded love Annisa
Ok, so here's something interesting and exciting!  I was doing some work on the computer this evening while innocently listening to Sirius Satellite Radio on my television when what to my wondering ears should appear -- but Martha Quinn's voice talking in DJ style in between songs.

Well first of all, I didn't know that Sirius Satellite Radio had people DJ-ing for them, and secondly, I was surprised to hear Martha.  Anyone who's at least my age, who grew up as the first generation watching MTV, should remember Martha Quinn.  She was one of their first VJ's.  You remember?   The one who looked like she was about 12?

Anyway, she starts talking about the UN's recent FAO report about cattle being the world's largest contributor to greenhouse gases!  I almost jumped up and down with girlish glee!  Here's Martha, MARTHA, talking about one of the things I've recently been campaigning about.

She put some links up on her website http://www.marthaquinnpresents.com/ about it.  Go to Martha's Clicks, in the middle of the page, scroll down a bit to the Back to Reality section, and check them out!

Here's the link I have up on my profile page:  Breaking News:  A 400-page report by the UN's Food and Agricultural Organization concludes:
Cow 'emissions' more damaging to planet than CO2 from cars

And here's a little factoid I compiled for a post on my pod about meat and dairy consumption:

The USDA says that the average consumption of red meat, poultry and seafood among Americans is 195 pounds per year!  For the average American family of 4 to 5 people, that equates to almost ONE-HALF TON of meat per year!  According to the same report, the average annual comsumption of milk is 23 gallons per person, and the average annual consumption of cheese per person is 29.8 pounds.  Per Wikipedia, the population of the United States reached 300 million in the fall of 2006.  This article in Vegetarian Journal in May of 2000 determined that 2.5% of Americans eat neither meat nor dairy (including eggs), and 4.5% do not eat meat.  So if we say an average of 3.5% of Americans are "vegetarians", we can calculate that 96.5% of Americans consume the average amounts of meat, milk and cheese.  That comes out to 289.5 million.  Some simple calculations and we can appreciate the full extent of meat and dairy consumption EVERY year in the United States:
     289,500,000 x 195 lbs. = 56,452,500,000 pounds of meat consumed per year
     289,500,000 x 23 gal. = 6,658,500,000 gallons of milk consumed per year
     289,500,000 x 29.8 lbs. = 8,627,100,000 pounds of cheese consumed per year
That's 56.4 BILLION pounds of meat consumed annually by the United States alone,
and 6.6 BILLION gallons of milk
and 8.6 BILLION pounds of cheese
And, according to EarthSave, for every pound of beef you DON'T eat, you reduce water consumption by 2,500 to 5,000 gallons per year.  In other words, it takes between 2,500 and 5,000 gallons of water to produce one single pound of beef for human consumption!

For an even more eye-opening discussion of this topic, please read this article on EarthSave.

Bottom line is, if you really want to help save the environment, you will cut your carbon impact more by becoming a vegetarian than by driving a hybrid car!

I have posted this on my pod How to Save the World, where a group of us has been working on either composing or finding a document to use in a grass-roots effort to reach out to people and show them how important what they eat really is, not just to their health, but to the health of the planet.  We have a lot of great, useful information on that pod and welcome fresh new voices.  Why don't you check it out?
