Al Gore is my main man! I'm almost glad he got cheated out of the presidency - that just might be the best thing that could have happened for our environment. It just might be our one hope. The Universe works in wondrous ways! Listen to what he's up to now:
Al Gore has teamed up with Emmy-winning producer of Live 8, Kevin Wall, in an effort to raise global awareness of our environmental emergency, and - get this - offer solutions that are practical, do-able, and life-enhancing. The launch event, the "tipping point," will be a concert held around the world. It will be just the kick-off to a global campaign intended to help begin the healing of the earth's ecosystems and create a sustainable future for our children and our children's children. It's called "SOS - Save Our Selves."
On 07-07-07 this concert will take place for 24 hours on all 7 continents in a global broadcast over television, radio, satellite radio, and internet, in an effort to take the message about our climate crisis to the entire world. In the United States, NBC will be the television network covering the event, with Bravo, Telemundo, Sirius and XM satellite radio and 2500 radio stations giving some support. 50 radio stations will be covering it live for the entire 24 hours of the show. MSN will be carrying it live globally from the beginning to the end of the show. In Japan there are two television networks covering it, and in Great Britain all the BBC networks will be participating.
More than 100 of our most well-known performers will be appearing, including: Jon Bon Jovi, the Red-Hot Chili Peppers, the Black-Eyed Peas, Faith Hill, Tim McGraw, the Foo Fighters, Melissa Etheridge, Duran Duran, Enrique Iglesias, John Mayer, Sheryl Crow, Lenny Kravitz and Korn, just to name a few.
The cities that are scheduled to host these concerts are: Shanghai, Sydney, Johannesburg, London, and cities yet to be announced in Brazil, Japan and the east coast of the U.S., plus a location in Antarctica. Each of the shows will run from 4 to 8 hours, and 2 to 3 shows will be playing at the same time, in an effort to have the concert run for a contiguous 24 hours to reach all the way around the globe.
While Al Gore was able to reach thousands of people with his slide show, and the movie "An Inconvenient Truth" reached millions, this event is intended to reach 2 billion people with the message. Once the concerts get people's attention, they will also be given resources and information as to how people can live zero-carbon lifestyles and have better lives in the process. He also mentioned that this kind of a change is going to create some great business opportunities, in moving away from old, earth-harming technologies into clean, sustainable, renewable ones that are life-enhancing.
"We have everything we need to solve the climate crisis, with the possible exception of political will. You've heard me say...political will is a renewable resource. Renewing that resource means connecting with the minds and hearts of people all over the world to convey an understanding of the situation," said Al Gore.
For more information, go to http://liveearth.msn.com and watch the news conference (it's about 42 minutes long, but worth it), or read this story on ABCNews.com, or "Gore plans to rock against warming," on MSNBC. The LiveEarth site is going to be the movement's presence on the web, but is just in its infancy right now. They will be developing it and adding cool features like hybrid vehicle channels, eco-friendly vacations and sustainable living resources, etc. in the near future. My suggestion is that you bookmark the site and visit it frequently to stay informed and find ways to get involved.

nice. good to know that this time the focus is on “offer solutions that are practical, do-able, and life-enhancing.” i dig that. those solutions are we ought to be doing anyway :)
i also like the shift in the title. “Save Our Selves”. it's more accurate than saving the planet.
let's see if this will bag that Nobel Peace prize :)

Yeah, this is definitely pretty cool.
I have a feeling they will end up doing the Brazilian show at Maracanã in Rio. At one point it was the largest stadium in the world. 'Course on the other hand, maybe they will just do what The Stones did and hold it on Copacabana Beach. That show hosted roughly a million people.
'Course who will show up for the Antarctica leg? A few scientists and half a million penguins? And who will play that show?
Very cool. Thanks for sharing.
Al Gore was a person who interested me in those elctions in states years ago. if he's still a politician, no thanks. If not, yes, thanks!
Love.
Annisa! glad to see another al gore fan, although, i have to say, perhaps winning the presidency wouldn't have been so bad, seeing as how it took bush up until recently to realize that global warming is a legitimate scientific issue, and has been for years. Gore would've been on this stuff from the get go, no convincing needed, no stuttering and mixing words on important issues, etc. Than you for the notice on this event, however, i'm in canada, so it would cost me major fossil fuels to get there-so i hope you all can rally up lots of locals, and i really hope that there aren't too many heavy F.F. excreting vehicles all pumping their way to see Faith Hill and Tim Mc.Graw. :)
Thanks so much for sharing information about this Wonderful Plan!
I agree that the title “Save Our Selves” is more appropriate than “Save the Planet” - the Earth is ready to kick us off our space vehicle if we don't treat it/her more kindly… ;-)
Too bad there aren't plans for any West Coast (of the USA) shows. :-(
I have always harbored, and nurtured, a strong belief that music contains the best medicine….I wonder if Bob Geldof is going to be involved in the planning (he put together Band-Aid)….I should check out your links….
Thanks again for sharing. What Wonderful News!

Saving the planet IS saving ourselves, anyway! There seems to be some egocentric touch that prevents many people from seeing this truth. Thanks for the news, Annisa. I hope this will help to raise more awareness and to cause a shift in behaviours at every single level…
I'm so excited about this!!! I am reposting your blog to my friends!
Thanks for the notice. I connected by way of Nishtha's post/link on her blog. I'm glad it's going to get some national tv coverage-so many truly important things do not in the US….are you familiar with linktv.org ? I haven't figured out how to make a link yet but they are an amazing group of people doing amazing things to change the world.
I am looking forward to it… what a great lineup of artists and we are still months away so that list should grow.

Challenge yourself to change one light bulb, have a meat-free day once a week, and unplug those power-draining appliances and computers when you're not using them. Check out http://www.davidsuzuki.org/NatureChallenge/ for a list of the top ten things you can do for the environment.
It's a good beginning.
Here's a partial list from http://liveearth.org of the featured entertainers:
